Appreciation after a race
I was talking to my team and we were discussing what to do when you achieve a big fitness goal or more specifically, a big race.
I wanted to pop up my thoughts on this on the blog because it will be insightful too many of my clients training for big goals at the moment.
So…
I want you to gain some insight into success and what to do after hitting a big goal.
This is what I’ve learnt in my years as a runner and world championship ironman competitor.
This is important because sometimes you can realise what you should have done too late. It’s better to understand how important these steps are early, otherwise it can impact not only you, but those around you.
I don’t want that for you.
I want you to be rested, in a good headspace and ready to tackle the next big goal when the time comes.
Here is what I want to share with you today:
1. Take some time off and celebrate your wins!!
There will always be the opportunity for another race, another goal..
Taking time off after a big achievement is so important for your body and your mind. If you’re straight onto the next big thing you give no time to appreciate what you have just achieved. You must sit with the goals you’ve achieved so far. What are you proud of achieving?
You alone understand what you had to sacrifice and overcome to cross that finish line – savour that – it will make you stronger as a racer and in life.
What went right in your training prep?
What challenges did you overcome and persevere through to achieve your goal?
2. Give thanks!
Now is the time to really acknowledge those who have made compromises and sacrifices around you to help achieve your goals. They have had your back and now it’s time to have theirs.
Take your family out for a nice meal, treat your partner to some respite as they have had to look after the kids more while you’ve been busy preparing.
You’ve been so focused on your goals, now it’s time to take on more of the load and really appreciate all the people that have been in your corner!
Giving back can go a long way to create harmony in your relationships. Acknowledge the role they have played to help you to achieve success and reduce any resentment moving forward on your next campaign.
Harmony in relationships is essential to create harmony at home and for your training.
3. No goal exercise
Something you may not have considered is to take yourself on a big walk or hike with no expectations. This can be great to relax and really soak up the achievements. Enjoy being out and about in the fresh air, appreciate what you have achieved, walk with a smile, a sense of joy and visualise the journey you have been on.
From the early morning training sessions, to training through when your motivation dropped to crossing the finish line. Let your body relax and take in a stroll or explore an area that you haven’t before. Now is the time to take it easy, the week after a big event can be a come down. Soak it all in. Let your body relax and you will be surprised at the results!
I hope you found my thoughts on this helpful!
I have recorded a video on this that I will post later this week to help you understand what I’ve been talking about,
P.S- If you’re looking for support in reaching your next big fitness goals or want to gain insight into getting your body strong for your next big race…
Keep at it team!
